A man was ordered to serve 10 days in jail for beating a 15-pound Jack Russell Terrier and causing the dog to lose an eye.
Randall Madison, 26, of Carol Stream, Ill., was babysitting the then 9-month-old dog in December 2007 when he beat her and choked her with a leash, according to prosecutors.
The dog, Sophie, suffered numerous bruises around the face and neck and the loss of her left eye.
Madison was also ordered to pay a $1,400 in veterinary bills, undergo a psychological evaluation and perform 150 hours of community service. He was also placed on probation for two years.
Earlier this month, Madison was convicted of misdemeanor animal cruelty, which carries a maximum one-year jail sentence.
Madison apologized for mistreating the dog before sentencing. During the trial he had said Sophie was hurt when he accidentally fell on her.
