PROVIDENCE ยป The mayor of a Utah town put a stop to enforcement of dog registrations after owners complained of door-to-door visits by animal-control officers.
Providence Mayor Randy Simmons says the roundup was "over the top."
The mayor acknowledged that Providence officials inadvertently started the crackdown it by asking animal control officers for the Cache County sheriff's office to start citing owners of unregistered dogs.
However, the dog wardens were systematically knocking on doors and had issued eight citations to owners who were only late renewing $10 annual dog registrations.
